Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you! – Dr Seuss

You’ve probably heard about the importance of letting your personality show in your approach to client communications. If you are like me you may have rather mixed feelings about this, especially if you are used to maintaining a pretty business-like demeanour in your dealings with your clients and if you tend to prefer a little privacy around your personal life.

I must admit that I get really impatient with the “oversharing” that seems to have crept from personal social media into some businesses posts. (no -we don’t want to know what you had for lunch!)

However, your business is founded on personal relationships and part of building those relationships is revealing a little of who you are as a person. While it may feel a little like letting your guard down, it’s OK to talk about things that are happening in your life and in your practice in your client communications.

Reveal yourself

Share the things that matter to you – which you are passionate about, whether that is your hobbies, your family or your football team. Start your newsletter introduction with a funny anecdote about how you have just joined the gym and your struggle to get of bed on these chilly mornings or how excited you were about your child’s first wavering steps last week.

Posting material on social media that you are interested in with an insightful comment is also a great way to connect with your clients. Select a great article on a relevant topic that is close to your heart and add a comment.

Some topics are no no’s. It’s probably a good idea not to get too political and avoid topics that are likely to be controversial.

It’s also about the team

Personalising your communications is not only about you. It’s also about demonstrating that you have a great team of people behind you.  Consider introducing a new member of the team to your clients or celebrate the little joys in the lives of your staff like the arrival of a new baby. Share news such as the details of a fundraising cause that your practice is currently supporting.

 Practical tips

Advant Plus allows you to have control over your client communications.

One of the most popular ways to add some personality is to customise the welcome message in your newsletter.

Add a photo so that your clients can see your smiling face or include a great photo of the whole team.

You can also create your own articles (ensuring your voice is really being heard). You don’t even have to add articles but can use this feature for some self-promotion. This is a great feature when there’s something new and exciting going on (specific to your practice) that you want your clients to know about. Perhaps your Dealer Group has added some new products you’d like to introduce to your clients? Or you’re offering additional services that you’d like your clients to be aware of?

Make the effort

It is certainly more of an effort to add your own voice and personality to the material you are sending to your clients but we assure you it’s worth it! There is nothing like the personal touch to strengthen client relationships.
